BEHIND THE DESIGN
Grease Monkey Mechanic sprang to life after collectors kept asking for a monkey-themed piece in my series. Diving into research, I gathered inspiration from cartoonish monkeys and apes that oozed attitude. With these ideas swirling in my head, I set to work sculpting my version of the Grease Monkey. I wanted him to have thick, matted hair with a wild flair and a cigar hanging from his lips to give him that rugged, world-weary vibe. Dressed in old-school jeans with a "bad" belt buckle and rocking stump-style boots with the tongues playfully sticking out, he had the unmistakable edge I was aiming for.
Crafting his tail was a real challenge, but I finally settled on shaping it into an S that hugged his body just right. I had him gripping his wrench in a distinctive pose to bring it all together, adding a touch of character to the sculpture. Creating this piece was an absolute blast, and it quickly became one of my favorites in the collection.
