BEHIND THE DESIGN
Rod the Rat Mechanic stands as a unique sculpt in my collection, born from countless requests for a Rat Fink-inspired piece. I’ve always stuck to my guns about not reproducing others’ artwork, so I set out to create my own rat-style hood ornament. That's how Rod the Rat came to life. I envisioned him with a blend of cartoonish charm and '50s nostalgia, complete with cuffed jeans and a belt that proudly displayed his name on the buckle.
The real challenge was figuring out how to handle his tail without it awkwardly sticking out behind the ornament. After some thought, I wrapped it around his bare feet for a more natural look. Naturally, he had to have a wrench slung over his shoulders, with little details like a subtle rip in his ear to add character. Rod the Rat became the first piece in my series, and I couldn’t be happier with how he turned out.
